BROAD COALITION CALLS FOR INVESTMENT IN UTAH’S FUTURE
On Thursday, February 20, 2020, on the steps of the Utah Capitol, a broad and diverse coalition of Utah advocates for the poor, for persons with disabilities, for education, health care, clean air, and for a variety of other popular Utah priorities held a press conference calling on the Utah Legislature to avoid cutting taxes until it has developed a comprehensive plan to address Utahns’ top concerns by investing in Utah’s future.

Utah Tax Reform: Dancing in the Dark

Members of the Utah Citizens’ Counsel had been studying the various proposals submitted by members of the Legislature’s Tax Restructuring and Equalization Task Force. The Task Force was urging a special session of the Legislature in December 2019 to pass the tax changes proposed by the Task Force co-chairs. Sheryl Allen, former State Representative, Utah Legislature, and Don Jarvis, Provo Sustainability Adviser, spoke to the student audience about tax reform issues and addressed the following: Is the Tax Force proposal ready for prime time? What do we know and not know about the implications of the proposal? Who wins? Who loses? Is the public still “dancing in the dark”?
